BMI

BMI Assessment November 22, 2010

BMI stands for Body Mass index. BMI is measures use to evaluate body weight relative to a persons height. It is also used to determine if a person is normal weight, underweight, overweight and excessively overweight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and helps to determine if your at risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain disease such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems and certain cancers. Though BMI can be used for most men and women it has it's limitations: It can over estimate body fat and others who have a muscular built. It can also under estimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle weight.

Evaluation Criterion
To calculate one's BMI, multiply one's weight in pounds by 703 and divide that by the squaee of one's height in inches. ex. weight______________divided by height (inches squared) ___________multiply by 703__________

BMI
Below 18.5          Underweight/Need Improvement
18.5-24.9            Normal Weight/Healthy
25.0-29.9            Overweight/Need Improvement
30.0 and above    Excessively Overweight/At Risk

Preparation for Assessment
To prepare for this assessment students must have their hight and weight measured. Students will do this by first taking their shoes off so that we can get an accurate weight and height.

How to Improve
If a person finds that they are underweight or at risk for being excessively overweight he or she should first consult their doctor before starting any training and diet plan. Also for the excessively overweight; small weight loss between 5 to 10 precent of your current weight will actually help lower the risk for developing the conditions and diseases associate with having a high BMI.

Validity
This is not the perfect method for measuring BMI in adults because it does not account for its tissue type. However, it is a good method for assessing body fat in children and some teens.

Realiability
I controlled my realiability by weighting each student to ensure a accurate BMI score for each student.

Class Performace
The class performed well, everybody was ready and willing to participate in the assessment.
Standard Deviation 4.14           Means 25.607                  Range 18.8 to 33.8

The class as a whole: (11) Normal Weight (8) Overweight  (3) Excessively Overweight  (0) Underweight

Males     (5) Normal  Weight   (4) Overweight  (2) Excessively Overweight  (0)  Underweight
